Networking Security: Facebook Data Breach

Facebook Data Breach

Facebook is the world's largest online social media and social networking service company. Recently, it had landed in a huge crisis and was being questioned for data compromise with an analytical firm. The personal data of up to 87 million users of Facebook was obtained by Cambridge Analytica. Cambridge Analytica engages in data mining and brokerage for communication processes.

A data scientist Aleksandr Kogan had helped develop an app ‘thisisyourdigitallife’ for Cambridge Analytica. The app encouraged users to take a psychological test and meanwhile collected the user's information. It also collected data from one’s friend list and other information.
It is still a mystery and is said that Cambridge Analytica used the collected data and created a software that helped leverage choices in the U.S. elections of 2016. They used “psychographic” targeting or modeling to target voters with hyper-specific appeals, including on Facebook and other online services.

Solution:
The co-founder, and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerburg has apologised for such a breach of trust. He has  banned the app from surfacing on Facebook completely. Also, Audits are being conducted for all apps that are allowed to task on Facebook, failing or not complying with which will completely ban the app from the network. Also, restrictions on access of data is being imposed to avoid such a abuse in the future. Facebook is also launching a tool, that will display the applications that are using the user's information and will also have an option to revoke the permissions. The company has also said it removed a feature that lets users to find other people through their email address or phone numbers.
